Wilderness Adventure or Relaxation

Tramping, trout fishing, hunting, mountain biking, bird watching or relaxation are all easily accessible from the lodge on Journeys End Station. Please talk to us about what you would like to do when you stay so that we can ensure we meet your expectations.

Tramping

Bush and farm walks are right on the doorstep of the lodge, they range in difficulty from short flat walks to longer steep walks. Near the back of this property are two Department of Conservation tramping tracks into the Urewera National Park. You can walk to the Tawa Hut and back in a day leaving from the lodge and enjoying views of New Zealand’s distinctive native forest, birds and wild game. More information about the Moanui, Tawa and Koranga Forks walks.

Fishing

At the back of the property runs the Koranga River. A Department of Conservation walking track runs further down the river to the Koranga Forks Hut and you can continue walking down the Waioeka River. Alternatively you can drive to fishing spots on the Waioeka and Motu Rivers which provide good trout fishing. This area provides some challenging and remote fly fishing, which caters well to those who enjoy having the river to themselves. You will require a fishing licence and catch and release is preferred. More information on trout fishing access in this area.

Mountain Biking

There are many unmarked farm tracks running through the farm which are suitable for moderate to challenging mountain biking. In November we are also looking forward to the opening of the Motu Cycle Trail (Motu Coach Road) which can include the Pakahi Track. This is a 40mins drive from Journeys End Station. More information about these mountainbiking trails. Pick up from Matawai can be arranged for those wanting to do the Motu biking trails or for those who are cycle touring around the east coast and are returning via the inland route on SH2.

Bird Watching and Wild Life

The native bush directly out from the lodge is abundant in birds and wildlife. Notable species that can be found here are Kiwi, Tui, Bellbird, New Zealand Pigeon (Kereru), North Island Robins, Fantail, Kaka, Native Bats, Red Deer and Wild Pigs.
